United Nations Academic Impact, as a part of “Skills and Technology Advancing Rapid

Transformation”, organized a seminar on 10th April in The United Nations Headquarters, New York. The seminar exclusively focused on the research, science and technology that contributes to the sustainable development which involves over 750 educational institutions, academicians and innovative students. The seminar undertook the example of “Kerala as a case study and its rapid transformation”, and had a number of prominent speakers conducting a series of discussions over Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

Location: United Nations, New York, US

Prominent panelists Mrs Mercy Kutty Amma, Minister of Fisheries; Dr Ayoob Sulaiman, Principle of TMK College; S. Karthikeyan, District collector Kollam, Kerala; and Lauren Barredo, Head of Partnerships, Sustainable Development Solutions Network; conducted discussions on issues like homelessness in Kerala and their project “Mission Life”supported by the UN. The international organisation is providing sustainable housing facilities, convergence of governance at all levels, social inclusiveness and job creation in remote villages of Kerala. Civil engineering students from TMK College, Kerala have conceptualized the idea of “Project EDAM" which aims at providing houses to 4.3 Lac homeless in a fiscally implementable manner. The project is being conducted in a four-tier system which includes maintenance and completion of existing homes as well as construction of the new ones. The bunch of engineering students from India have set an excellent example of social and moral responsibility goals realized whilst at the same time, boosting the economy and creating opportunities in underprivileged areas. All the projects are cost effective and have minimal to no environmental impact.

The event was a success and bore testament to the fact that ideas implemented on a small scale, which can alleviate the troubles of the destitute section of society, can change the world. The recognition of this endeavor on a global scale will inspire students everywhere to present their ideas fearlessly and has reinforced the notion that an ideal world is not only possible but can become an achievable reality.
